A recent report conducted by the UNHCR projects that over 1.4 million refugees will need urgent resettlement in 2020. Currently the majority (84%) of the world’s refugees are hosted by developing countries already struggling to overcome their own socioeconomic hurdles. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, is imploring the global community to take a more “equitable” stance on the refugee crisis and increase international efforts to resettle those displaced by conflict and persecution through traditional and complementary pathways. In addition, the UNHCR has underscored the importance of bolstering protections for LGBTI refugees who face disparate levels of violence and exploitation.
